Another Lagos Flood story

Many houses, offices and vehicles were submerged in parts of Lagos on Thursday, following hours of heavy rainfall.
Reports from across the state indicated that floods inundated parts of the state, causing heavy traffic and damage to property.
Many commuters and motorists were stranded on some roads within the state while some had to park on some highways, due to the poor visibility.
The situation was compounded by the lingering fuel scarcity and long queues at filling stations.
Many motorists parked their vehicles on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, to avoid running into flooded portions of the Long Bridge at Warewa.
Residents of rural aras of Lagos and Ogun states were also in a quandary, as dirt roads were covered in flood and mud.

UNIJOS on rapid gunfire..

Reports from Plateau State say that unknown gunmen this evening stormed the University of Jos and shot several students, leaving at least two female students dead.
Although details are sketchy, our sources say that several others escaped with injuries.
A source told Sahara Reporters there is tension on the campus as hundreds of students were seen running for their lives, unwilling to wait for an explanation as to what had led to the shootings.
The source said that armed security personnel have already been dispatched to the university, but the identity of the attackers and their motives are still unknown.
As of the time of this report, neither the Plateau State Police Command, nor the Special Task Force nor the management of the university has issued a statement concerning the attack.

OBJ gets UN awards..BABA O double tualee!!

Although his tenure as President of Nigeria has long been over, Olusegun Obasanjo seems to be getting more and more international recognition.
In June, the former President was appointed an adviser to New World Oil and Gas plc, an AIM-listed investment company focused on investing in and operating oil and gas assets {click here to read the report}.
Now, just a few months later, he has gotten another international recognition, this time from the United Nations.

On Sunday, in New York, the UN conferred on him the South-South Awards for Global Leadership.
The ceremony was part of the 2nd Annual South-South Awards which took place at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel during the High-Level Segment of the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly.
According to NAN, the 2012 South-South Award recognises, shares and disseminates the most outstanding success stories and lessons learned in South-South and triangular cooperation in using ICT for

The selection process for the Awards is led by an internationally recognised jury, and the Awards are organised in close cooperation with several international organisations under the patronage of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations World Trade Organisation (WTO).
The criteria for the nomination and selection of Award winners focus on achievements and initiatives, which represent outstanding contributions and advances in the use of ICT and media in advancing the MDGs.

Wizzy tells manager SEGOBE/ODABO/PUOR

NET can officially report that pop star Ayo ‘Wizkid‘ Balogun and long-time manager Osagie Osarenkhoe have parted ways.
The news might be surfacing now but inside sources say the EME star singer and Osarenkhoe who runs her own outfit M.e.tal Management ended their business relationship back in June 2012.
It’s uncertain why the pair parted ways and no one in their camps is divulging information on the surprise split. Some sources however believe Wizkid felt he wanted a better deal with Osagie, a deal that would pay better than the current ‘sharing formula’ they initally agreed too work by.
We got in touch with Osarenkhoe and asked about her about her partying ways with Wizzy, ‘I don’t think I am in the best position to answer these questions‘, she responded.
EME is yet to respond to our queries concerning the same matter.
Osarenkhoe handles management for other EME acts Skales, Shaydee and Niyola through her M.e.tal management platform. She is credited for introducing Wizkid, Skales and later on Shaydee to EME who went on to sign the young acts. EME have already announced they are ‘currently seeking for a General Manager to manage its growing business and build up the EME label‘.

Corps member gets traditional title for helping community

When posted to Oyo State for the one year National Youth Service Corps programme,  little did Odunayo Amosu know that so much was lying in the offing for her. However, with a few weeks more to round off, the 25 year-old Micro Biology graduate from the Lagos State University expressed joy that despite series of huddles across her path, she was able to fulfil her set goals in the service year. According to her, the service year came with different interesting tasks, trials and challenges.
Amosu said that her ultimate dream in life was to touch the lives of the less – privileged and the vulnerable. The road to meeting the goal was rough and bumpy, but she stated, “The interesting thing is that I’m able to meet up. I came, I saw and I conquered.”

Writting skills for Corps members..

In line with the new policy of the National Youth Service Corp to boost skill acquisition and entrepreneurship among corps members, 100 hundred corp members were introduced to  jobs in freelance writing to cushion the effect of unemployment.

A Batch A corps member, LEAP Africa Alumnus, and Founder of Penpreneurs, Biodun Awosusi, organized a training tagged ‘Corpers Writing Opportunities’ on 7th September for hundred corps members The training was organized in partnership with the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development unit of NYSC Lagos, Jobberman, Ribena and Etisalat.
Other speakers were Wale Akanbi (Ribena Brand manager), Ayodeji Adewunmi (Co-founder Jobberman), Tunji Ajani (E-green services), Oluwaseun Ajibade (Penexus Consulting), Obajeun Ayodele (Blogger) and Adepoju Victor (Partner at Penpreneurs).
Participants learnt avenues to make money through writing, resume writing, and business plan and proposal design. They are required to explore their skills after the training. Each person can apply to online writing companies, commence blogging for personal or corporate use and/or provide writing services at the primary place of assignment.
At the training, Mrs Rachael Idaewor, Head of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurial development in Lagos, encouraged corp members to embrace the new initiative of NYSC and learn new skills they can put to use during and service. “Writing is an important skill for progress in life”, she says, “it is therefore timely that this training is taking place to equip corps members to become better writers. I commend the organizers and encourage you all to make the best use of what you learn”.

Biodun is a Batch A corps members and medical doctor serving at Odi Olowo Local council development area, Lagos State in a mother and child centre. He is the first African Young Ambassador for Opportunity. He has great flair for writing. His passion for the art of writing motivated to start Penpreneurs initiative to promote job creation through freelance writing opportunities.
He says “unemployment is a big issue in Nigeria. The President acknowledged this in his 2012 budget speech. National Bureau of Statistics says there were 16million people in Nigeria as at 2011. This value is about 16times the entire population of the Gambia! The current estimate is 23.9%. This statistics is deeply disturbing. I cannot just sit down and see so many unemployed young people walk on the street when they can explore freelance writing opportunities to make money”
According to him, many unemployed are currently searching for jobs in contemporary companies with limited opportunities. He says ‘They do not understand that the world of work is changing; companies are outsourcing to freelancers and hyperspecialists. In the United States, there are over 140,000 freelance writers and authors but less than 5,000 in Nigeria. We need to create, build and structure the freelance writing industry in Nigeria so that it can create thousands of jobs for young people and added income for adults’..CP AFRICA

Davido&Wizkid at loggerheads

Disturbing news exclusively reported by NET about two young singers, Davido and Wizkid may get dirty if it is not quickly dealt with by icons in the industry.

According to what NET reported, all seem not to be well between the two former close pals. At the September 2, 2012 NEA awards held in New York, USA, Davido reportedly walked out on Wizkid when the latter mounted the stage to perform at the event.

Sources then revealed to us that Davido stood outside doing nothing but may have intentionally walked out because he didn't want to see his 'rival' perform while he would be watching.

Report says that strain in the relationship between Davido and Wizkid may have started when news went round that Davido was signed on D'Banj's record label. This, as it was reported, caused his relationship with Wande Coal to hit the rocks as Wande' boss, Don Jazzy was no longer in good terms with D'Banj after their reported split early this year.

Both Wizkid and Davido were reported to be learning the ropes from Wande Coal, who they took as mentors, until Don Jazzy, as reported, ordered Wande Coal to cut off his relationship with Davido after the latter decided pitched tent with the Kokomaster, D'Banj.

It was even reported that Davido had initially planned to feature Wande Coal and Wizkid in two different songs of his but both stylishly shunned him. First, Wande Coal was reported to have told the 'omo baba olowo' to pay 1.5million Naira to have him on his song. Davido was reported to have wanted to go ahead to provide the cash, but his manager, Asa Asika stopped him.

Secondly, Wizkid was reported to have told Davido that his beat, which he reportedly made for the collabo to featured Wizkid on, was below standard. This, as reported, angered Davido and the battle line was drawn from that moment.

Wizkid was said to have declined doing any duet with Davido because of Wande Coal, who was reported, may have told Wizkid to do so.

These disappointments by his 'friends' was reported to have led Davido to have done the song in his album titled ‘All of you,’ where Davido said he was better than ‘everyone’, but paying tributes to the likes of 2face, P-Square and D’banj as mentors.

This, as reported, may have been the brain behind the absence of EME and Mavin records crew at Davido's OBO album launch concert held in July 2012 in Lagos.

As at press time, we were unable to contact either parties to react to the story, but we hope to get their reactions soon as we get them.

Iyanya na my baby! Oritsefemi

Iyanya is a Nigerian singer that has before now, not being able to break into the showbiz mainstream especially in the music industry. After becoming the winner of the maiden edition of music reality game show, MTN Project Fame, the Calabar, Cross River State zone representative of the show found it difficult to make it big musically.

About two singles Iyanya released after the show were not commercially successful. This may have made him to dumped RnB style of music for the commercial style of dance-hall music. His 'Kukere' single has now shot him into an instant limelight.

While a guest on a radio show recently, 'Better' singer, Oritsefemi revealed that rave of the moment artiste, Iyanya is a baby to him. He said that the 'Etighi dance' artiste cannot feature in any of his songs that is intended to be put in his (Oritsefemi) album.

The Delta State-born artiste, who recently launched his album at Rumours Club, Ikeja, Lagos, also said that Iyanya is not his kind of artiste claiming that the Calabar-born singer is only just like a baby to him.

Oritsefemi revealed that he can only do a song with Iyanya if such song is intended to be featured in Iyanya's album. Will this revelation by Oritsefemi pitch both artistes against each other?

Jona must Apologise or else!..SEUN KUTI

Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti has publicly asked the Federal Government to apologise to his family for the death of his grandmother, Funmilayo Kuti, before putting her picture on the proposed N5000 note.

Let’s go back in time; it’s February 1978, and Nigeria was being ruled by the military, led by General Olusegun Obasanjo. One of the most influential women in the country, Olufunmilayo Ransome Kuti is resting in her Surulere abode, where two of her sons – Doctor Beko Ransome Kuti and musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti also call home. Her house is then invaded by a thousand unknown soldiers who attack and brutalise Beko and Fela, vandalize property, including Beko’s hospital, but in the heat of these inhumane behaviours of 'Kaaki Boys', they allegedly throw Olufunmilayo from the second floor of her house to the ground.

The first woman in Nigeria to drive a car and to ride a bike; a woman often regarded as ‘The mother of Africa’ slips into a coma and in April that year, died from the injuries sustained.

Today, Goodluck Jonathan is the President of the junta that killed the woman, and Seun, with full support of his elder brother and sisters, are asking for unreserved apoloogies from FG.

If you recall, the Federal Government have announced a proposed N5000 note to be printed and circulated in the country. They have also announced that they are considering putting Funmilayo Kuti’s picture on the note. Her four children – Olikoye, Beko, Fela and Dolupo, who protested her death back then are all dead, but one of her grandsons’ Seun Kuti isn’t taking the news lying down.

"She was murdered by the Federal Government, her house was burnt down on that same day, two of her children were brutalised, almost killed on that same day and the family have not receive any apology or compensation, most especially justice for such atrocity." Seun said.

Seun, an Afrobeat musician himself, is asking for not just an apology, but for someone to be held responsible for the February ’78 attack which resulted in the death of his grandmother.

Social network campaigns have been put in gear, with family, fans and friends of the Kutis. On Facebook an ‘I Hate the New 5000 Naira Note’ group was opened. On micro-blogging site Twitter, popular singer-producer Tha Suspect who is also an ‘advocate of the masses’ said ‘Elder Funmilayo Kuti On The #5,000 Note?? Plenty Apologies Go First Take Place but Shame go Gree Govt?’

NYSC assures on Security

NYSC in a statement in Abuja, meanwhile, called on Taraba State Government to come to the aid of those who lost valuable belongings in the incident.
The scheme appealed to parents of the victims to see the robbery incident as an isolated case, that should not be taken as security threat, while calling on the Police authorities in the state to fish out the perpetrators.
The statement said, “NYSC management wishes to appeal to the Taraba State Government, which sits in locus parentis for the corps members serving in the state to take steps towards alleviating the suffering of those who lost valuable belongings in the incident. Taraba State Police Command is also urged to expedite action towards fishing out the perpetrators of this dastardly act and to make them to face the full wrath of the law.
“Management also appeals to the parents of the corps members to see the incident as an isolated case of brigandage, which should not be taken as a security breach. On its part, the NYSC will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure the continued protection of corps members nationwide”.

Police & Thief film in Lasgidi

The Commissioner of Police in his account of how the robbery attack was carried out said: “The operations started early in the morning, dressed in mufti and snatched a vehicle around Gbagada area with intent to use it to carry out robbery attack in certain places.
They were intercepted by the traffic policemen who were just resuming duty while they abandoned the vehicle and disappeared.
“The bandits now resurfaced around Ikeja-Agege axis in the afternoon, going round looking for places to rob. While they were doing that the police were on their trail looking out for them but police lost control of their whereabouts because the robbers were in possession of police walkie-talkie and were intercepting police conversations.
“A few minutes after that they succeeded in robbing a Bureau de Change at Agege and as they were coming out the police anti-robbery team and Rapid Response Squad, RRS, members who had already blocked all major highways on the instruction of the CP now intercepted them around Oba Akran Avenue and Ikeja under bridge. They succeeded in killing three of the policemen there in an exchange of fire.
“Some of the armed robbers were fatally wounded as there were blood stains at the scene after they escaped through the old toll gate.
Meanwhile, the CP has ordered a 24-hour surveillance and combing of all the nooks and crannies of the state in search of the fleeing bandits.
He has also directed Area Commanders and DPOs to comb all the areas under their jurisdiction with a view to arresting the bandits.
